Throughout your life I’m sure you have been proud of many of your accomplishments, both great and small. From purchasing your first car to finding your mate, you have experienced many great things in your life. Up to this point, you have taken great pride in your work, your family, and the life you have created for yourself. Then you are handed your new baby. This is by far one of the greatest feelings of pride you have ever experienced. As visitors come to see your infant your feeling of pride grows. You created this little person; you are proud of that.
When you bring your child home you watch with pride as they begin to grow and develop. You are ecstatic when they can sit up on their own. You are even more proud when they begin crawling. With every milestone they cross, your feeling of pride grows because you are the one guiding and supporting them as they learn. Since the arrival of your child, you have set aside feelings of pride in your own accomplishments; you have instead been experiencing pride in your child’s accomplishments.
Being a parent is an incredibly selfless job. You are suddenly putting your child and their feelings before yourself and your own feelings. Your feelings of happiness and pride are suddenly coming from your child’s accomplishments rather than your own. In the past, your focus was most likely on yourself, your career, you achievements. Now as a parent, you have the opportunity to slow down and realize that though your accomplishments are great, those of your child seem more important and worthy of praise.
PINK Newborn Services would love to hear stories about the pride you felt when you became a parent. Please share with us any special stories you have about the shift in feeling pride for your own accomplishments to feeling pride for your child’s accomplishments. Take time to reflect on how proud you are of every tiny thing your infant does and every milestone they cross.
