Let’s start by listing all the technology that helps make life with your newborn easier and safer. Most families probably purchase baby monitors, a bottle warmer, special bottles to reduce baby’s air consumption while eating, a car seat, a stroller, swaddling blankets, a sleep positioner, a Boppy pillow, pacifiers, baby, wipes, disposable diapers, a baby thermometer, and a baby carrier like the Baby Bjorn. These are just “the basics” in today’s world of baby supplies! The list could go on and on and include some pretty
outrageous and creative products. As a parent, did you ever stop to think what life would be like without so many of these helpful products?
Think back to a time when all bottles were made of glass, all diapers were cloth, there were no baby monitors, no bottle warmers…. Can you even imagine what it was like taking care of a newborn without the luxury of today’s technological advantages? Dirty diapers had to be washed by hand or piled in a pail until there were enough for a load in the washing machine. Glass bottles broke into a million tiny pieces when they were accidentally dropped as mothers were juggling baby and household chores. Without baby monitors, parents were not able to easily push a button to see that their baby
was sleeping soundly on their back. Bottles had to be warmed in a pot of boiling water on the stove.
How thankful are you for all the conveniences you have at your disposal that help lower your stress level and energy output while caring for your newborn? Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to have so much help caring for our children these days. We have become jaded by the amount of technological advances that have been made in the last twenty years! If you stop to think just how many things you use on a daily basis that did not even exist 10, 20, or 30 years ago you will be amazed! How did we ever live without so many of these products and tools?
During this week, slow down and take a few moments to appreciate all the technology that helps make your life easier. PINK Newborn Services would love to hear your stories about how thankful you are for technological advances that make caring for your newborn easier. We also encourage you to take some time to discuss this topic with older generations and share your findings with us. Listen to stories of how they cared for their newborns and children without the modern technologies we have today. After hearing their stories, take some time to evaluate your use of technology in everyday life. Do you really need to have your phone within reach at all times? Do you have to check your e-mail 30 times a day? What forms of technology can you cut back on, or eliminate, in order to create more time to spend with your newborn?
