Years ago, glass bottles were parents’ only option for bottle feeding their baby. Then along came the plastic bottle that was lightweight and shatter-proof and parents were delighted to have a “safer” option to bottle feeding their child. THEN… plastic bottles were found to contain toxins such as bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Parents were terrified that their convenient option now posed a concern to their child’s health. So companies began manufacturing plastic bottles that were free of the dangerous chemicals, but they could not eliminate the fact that plastic bottles can become discolored and retain odors.
With so many options on the market today, what is a parent to do? How do you go about choosing an eco-friendly bottle that is safe and will last a lifetime (not that your baby will need their bottles for more than one year, but what a nice gift to pass on to family and friends’ babies!)? While scouring through all sorts of eco-friendly products for this month’s blogs, I kept running into Lifefactory’s™ glass bottles. Then I went to visit a friend and again found these colorful glass bottles at her house!
Here’s the deal… Though parents have been wary of using glass bottles since plastic bottles became an option, they really are a great product! “Lifefactory™ fuses modern sensibility, eco-friendly composition, and exceptional utility to produce glass baby bottles, glass beverage bottles, and teethers that are free of known harmful chemicals including BPA, phthalates, and PVC.” The bottles produced by this company come in 4oz and 9oz sizes and *Bonus* they can easily be converted to sippy cups by purchasing a different top for the bottle. In addition, in case you are thinking “What if my child drops the bottle?”, the bottles are covered in a colorful silicone sleeve that protects it from breaking. Of course, the bottles can break if they are not handled properly, so adult supervision is required (but Pink Newborn Services does not recommend letting your child walk around with a bottle anyway, so that eliminates the need for concern.) Finally, if you are not sold already, the bottles are dishwasher safe and you do not have to worry about them coming out of the dishwasher with any sort of greasy film, odor, or discoloration that sometimes occurs with plastic bottles.
Let’s re-cap. Lifefactory’s™ bottles are toxin/chemical free, convert to sippy cups, protected by a silicone cover, won’t change color or retain odors, and can potentially last a lifetime (or one year of bottle use for countless babies, just keep passing them on!). So will you make the switch to this wonderful glass bottle?
