Is there anything else in the world that touches your heart and soul the way your new baby does? From the way they squint in the bright light of the world to the way they smile in their sleep, they capture your undivided attention and fascinate those around them. Parents have been known to take hundreds of pictures of their baby sleeping, that’s all, just sleeping. Why is it that we find everything about a new baby, even the way they sleep, so beautiful?
From the day you find out you are going to be a parent you wonder, “What will this new little person look like?” At the first ultrasound, expectant parents “Ooh” and “Ahh” over the tiny, blurry image on the screen. You show pictures from the ultrasound to family and friends saying things like, “Here is the head. Here are the arms. Don’t you think this baby will be strong? Look at those legs!” Truth is, those you show these pictures to try and try to imagine a baby in the photo, but most likely have a hard time even deciphering the head from the belly.
New technology now allows you to see a 3-D image of your baby, but still, this image does not do justice to just how beautiful your baby will be! Parents who adopt or use a surrogate may not have the opportunity to see images of their child before they are delivered which makes the eagerness to see their baby even more intense. The anticipation of seeing your new baby heightens during labor and delivery and then it happens, you are handed your new baby.
Immediately your eyes begin darting from the baby’s hair to their cheeks to their tiny mouth. You are overcome with emotion as you study your infant. Has there ever been another baby as beautiful as the one you are holding? As you touch their cheeks and hold their tiny hand you cannot help but think “I can’t believe you are here! For so long I wondered who you would be and what you would look like. Here you are and you are more amazing than I had ever imagined.”
In the next few weeks you find yourself staring in amazement as your baby becomes acquainted with their new world. You hold, rock, sing to, and cuddle your baby to no end. It is as though a spell has been set upon you, you are completely enchanted by this tiny wonder. You know there truly is no greater gift than that of a beautiful new baby.
