Imagine this scenario if you will. You have worked a ten hour day at your job. You come home and have to prepare dinner and do three loads of laundry. You bathe your baby, feed her the last bottle of the day, and lie her down for bed. You breathe a sigh of relief when you finally get to sit down, only to hear your baby begin fussing on the monitor. You close your eyes and repeat in your head “Go back to sleep, go back to sleep, go back to sleep”. After ten minutes you give up and enter the bedroom to calm your baby. Throughout the night she stirs two more times and the dog begs to go outside to “do it’s business” at 5am. At 6:30 am, baby is ready for her breakfast. You fumble making her bottle. You smile as you see her bright eyed in her crib. After changing her diaper you sit down in the glider to feed her breakfast. She feels warm in your arms and seems to fit perfectly in your lap. As she drinks her bottle, you revel in the feeling of being a mother and cuddling with your new baby.
I can assume most of you reading this have had days and nights like this. After experiencing a non-stop day you come home to more chores. Your baby has no idea how tired you are and insists on waking several times during the night. In the morning, however, when you cradle your baby in your arms, you are not focused on the exhaustion, stress, and amount of responsibility you have. You are solely focused on this beautiful baby in your arms. You are focused on what an amazing feeling it is to cuddle with your infant and know they need you. You can almost feel your stress melt away as your baby smiles at you and wraps their tiny hand around your finger.
How is it that such a tiny person can take away every care in the world and completely entrance you? Is it their profound innocence? Is it the wonder in their eyes as they blink against the light and take in the world around them? Is it knowing that this small wonder needs you and depends on you to care for and nurture them? No matter what it is about your infant that gives you that sense of calm and joy, you know you can always find it when your baby is wrapped in your arms.
Have you ever had an insanely stressful day at work, come home, dropped everything at the door, and whisked your baby into your arms? Did you forget the stress of the day the moment you picked up your infant? The grimace on your face probably turned into a bright smile in less than a millisecond when you picked up your child. Regardless of the fact that as soon as your baby went to sleep that night all the stresses re-entered your mind, while you were holding and cuddling your baby, nothing else in the world
mattered!
